I have a PhD in Spanish History from the University of London and I taught History, Spanish and Gender Studies in UK universities for two decades. I am currently Visiting Senior Fellow in the Department of Gender Studies at the London School of Economics.

In 2019 I embarked on a new career as a freelance editor, translator and writing mentor.

I specialise in editing and translating scholarly texts in the humanities and social sciences, academic writing aimed at non-specialist readers, and general and creative nonfiction. I offer substantive and developmental editing as well as copyediting and proofreading for academics at all stages of their careers, PhD students, other writers and publishers.

I am fully bilingual and have worked across Spanish and English for over thirty years. I’ve translated two books and many academic articles and chapters from Spanish to English.

My own writing explores the relationship between history, political activism and social change. I’ve written books, articles and essays on Spanish and Cuban history, feminism, oral history, revolutionary movements, human-animal relations and veganism, and drug policy.

My editing, translation and mentoring work is grounded in my teaching and research skills, my many years working as an editor of academic journals, and my experience as a published author of both academic and general nonfiction.

Having made the transition from academic writing to general and creative nonfiction, I especially enjoy working with scholars and other authors who want to write intellectually rigorous texts in creative and accessible prose for diverse audiences.

I’m Carrie Lou Hamilton.
